A mutual fund creates collective buying power by pooling the money of thousands of participating investors.
The determining price for a share of a fund is the net asset value (NAV), which equals the total value of the securities the fund owns divided by the number of shares outstanding. For example, a mutual fund with $15m worth of stocks and bonds and 1.5 million shares would have a NAV of $10.
